When it comes to saving on your energy bills and keeping your home at a consistent temperature, adding insulation to your home is one great way to do so. Adding the right insulation to your home can help you manage your energy costs.
Area #1: Insulate Your Attic
If you want to decrease your energy bills, you should start by insulating your attic. If you don't have any insulation in your attic, you are probably losing heat as it rises through your home and out of your attic. If you have older insulation in your attic, it may not be doing an adequate job of keeping your home's temperature regulated.
To start with, you will want to make sure the walls of your attic are insulated. Then, you are going to want to put down a layer or two of unfaced protected on the floor of your attic for further protection.
Area #2: Insulate Your Water Heater
Next, you should insulate your water heater. This will reduce the energy you need to use to create hot water in the winter months. You can put a fiberglass jacket that is designed for water heaters around your water heater. It will wrap around your water heater, kind of like a blanket, and help reduce heat loss.
Area #3: Add Weatherstripping to Your Doors
Lots of heat can escape around doors, which is why you should add new weatherstripping around all your exterior doors. Rubber weatherstripping can be applied to both the bottoms and sides of your doors and door frame. You may even want to use a double draft stopper if there is a big gap of space between your door and the floor. Cutting down on drafts around your doors can help to prevent warm air from leaving your home.
Area #4: Replace Storm Door Screen
If you have a storm door in your home with a screen, you should swap the screen out with a solid piece of glass in the winter. This will provide an extra layer of insulation during the winter months, and when spring rolls around, you can easily swap out the screen door with a storm door.
